My friend and I often laugh about our current super power. We discovered this ability quite by happenstance. We are now invisible--- most of the world does not see us. This amazing power came along with advancing years. I really was not interested in looking for a super power. After all, these are the golden years--we are supposed to sit and rock away the remaining time in peaceful bliss. If you have not reached the point of being "golden", I must warn you---the rocker is wobbly, the peace is nowhere to be found, and the gold has lost its tarnish. I find myself busy as ever, but without the energy I once had. My bedtime has become earlier, and my rising is now in the middle of the night. I have dragged Hero out for his early walk, and then finished my long walk LONG BEFORE the sun has come up. For this reason, I am looking forward to the time change---back to the way it was in the beginning decades of my life. There was no change during those "Good Ole Days"---I am not a big fan of change and routine is my close friend. Explain to me again---the need to change the time. I DIGRESS---back to the subject--my new super power.
To any of you who have ever experienced this feeling of being invisible---
I SEE YOU
As an eternal student of human beings, I see you---I am always watching. If you walk by me, I will acknowledge your presence. Always a smile, perhaps a nod or wave---and many times a greeting. I want you to know---I see you. You have just become a part of my day and I am always interested in you. Age matters not---young or old---I would love to know what you are thinking about. What is your story? In today's world, we are often wary of the stranger. In one of my recent early morning walks, I passed a homeless man sitting on the curb as I briskly walked past in the dark of the early morning. I spoke a "Good Morning"--but did not slow down. Sadly in today's world we are careful to not invite the stranger into our midst and are cautious above all. The brightness of the daylight hours gives us a feeling of safety--knowing we can be seen. Even then---we often scurry by the stranger--without even a passing glance. FOR FEAR
As I began writing this, three thoughts rose to the surface:
"Don't mistreat any foreigners who live in your land.
Instead, treat them as well are you treat your own people
and love them as much as you love yourself."
Leviticus 19:33
"Don't correct an older man.
Encourage him, as you would your own father.
Treat younger men as you would your own brother,
and treat older women as you would your own mother.
I Timothy 5:1-2
"Fear not, for I am with you."
Isaiah 41:10
I see you, Friends----young and old----I see you.
And I see you, Loralu! Yes, it's so sad that as we age, we seem to be invisible to others who are younger in years, but we both know that as long as we have breath, we have something to offer. Let's simply be kind to others and smile often. If others choose not to see, we've still done ourselves a world of good. Blessings!
