I KNOW BETTER BUT-

As #1 daughter and I discussed the Supreme Court decision on marriage between same sex couples, I came away convicted to share tidbits of our conversation.

Let me begin by telling you, I do not agree with their decision, but also feel there should be the opportunity for a legal union between consenting adults.  As she and I talked it over, we thought of the end of life decisions, medical decisions, health benefits, child rearing decisions, to name a few which in the past same sex couples had no protection or provision for.  Yes, I think marriage is reserved for couples of opposite gender and Holy Matrimony should be reserved for the same, but I also recognize the need for fairness in the law.  I expect to be lamblasted, so fire away!

The Word instructs us to LOVE the sinner--not the sin.  I ask myself how would Jesus have reacted to meeting a gay couple?  He would have loved them--as He loved all sinners.  But the purpose of this post is not to weigh in pro or con.

There are two points I desire to share

God is ALL powerful---this did not happen without His permission.  Why?  Are we headed down the slippery slope to destruction?  I do not know why He allowed this to happen.  I do know He could have stopped it if He wanted.  I never for one minute think God is not in control.

The light shines the brightest when it is the darkest.  Perhaps this is the opportunity for the church to be the bright light--the beacon of hope--in the deep dark our nation has become.  Perhaps God is using this to wake us up and remind us of who He has called us to be.  Salt and Light--to a dying and lost world.  A beacon of light in a dark world.

I hesitated to open this can of worms---I have read and heard much from both sides that seem to go nowhere in settling the question.  I will never argue anyone into changing their position.  I can be the salt and the light--and my actions and how I react to this crisis are being watched by all.

GOD is in control--now what does He expect of us?

You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16

  1. In fairness, my sil is gay...very difficult to deal with. Love her, but can not accept the choice she has made, not that she speaks to us anyways, as she says we are too "Preachy and Christian". You are to love the sinner but not allow the sin Lulu. Now, let me also say, as a student of History, (not that I am arguing as I had the same conversation with bil who called laughing and telling us to stick our beliefs where the sun don't shine)--there is nothing in the Constitution about marriage, period. The 10th Amendment deals with states sovereignty and that the Federal Government can not supercede a states rights. That is what the Supreme Court did, 17 or so states/people voted against gay marriage--the people voted...anyways--just taking it from a History point of view. Marriage is strickly a state issue, not a federal issue. Marriage has always been a Holy Sacrement (sp?).

As Franklin Graham and Aveda King said, God's Law trumps Man's law. Amen. God expects us to follow Him and obey Him. Yes, friend, He knew what was going to happen, now, he wants a rallying cry for the Christians to stand up or see how we will handle it...I am afraid though, to many will stick their heads in the sand. The government far out reached the peoples vote--never in my lifetime did I think this would happen, never. Did we not fight against this very thing against England and the King (sorry Victor, smiles)? Did we not pit brother against brother in war? Have we not learned anything?

Again, God's law trumps Man's. Pure and simple. Great post, Lulu. Like my bil said, who called back to apologize as he had time to look things up, this topic is not worth pitting brother against brother (or in this case, sil and bil) against one another. However, I will stand my ground as to what God says, we can have different matters of opinion, that is fine. He does give us the choice to choose right or wrong and not one of us will escape judgement day. Not one.

    1. Good reply-well thought out and worded . The morphing of our nation in my lifetime fueled by turning from God is tragic. I have observed the breakdown of the family in the school systems & see the havoc that has wrecked. My cry/ "Lord, have mercy on us!"
      Blessings, Dear Friend!

  2. In the UK, for a number of years, we had "Civil Partnerships" which provided same sex couples the legal rights you mention above. Then the Government, with support from most other political parties, and strong opposition from the Churches, (most denominations), legalised same sex marriage. It gave little if any legal protections, but allowed same sex couples to "marry" either in a civil court or in Church even. Some churches still oppose this - e.g. the Catholics.

As you say Lulu, God is still in control. He has allowed this to happen for simple reasons:

When He created humanity He had two choices: He could have either created a race of robots all pre-programmed to do His will. And their would be no evil, no Satan, no sin or anything bad ever. Or, in His generosity and love, He could have created a humanity who has free will. Free will to choose right from wrong, to choose to love Him back or not, to believe in Him even, or choose not to.

In our free will we do many things that He may not approve of. He let's us do so. Because interference by Him on a big scale, (the Old Testament is full of examples), would mean taking away our freedom. Freedom hard won by Christ's sacrifice.

Ours is not to judge. Our role in this and any other matter is to pray. And to be an example that others might want to follow.

    God bless.

    1. Typing error: I should have said: "It gave little if any NEW legal protections ..."

  4. Everyone has a right to their opinion but what we don't have a right too is to misinterpret God's Holy Word. Homosexuality is a sin, in fact God calls it an abomination (pretty strong words if you ask me). We are suppose to judge peoples actions not their eternal destinations. If we don't just actions we become a lawless society. And, as Simply Linda stated, there is no constitutional right to marriage. All this unjust law is about is it's an "in your face Christians" from the man who now calls himself Barack Hussein Obama and his hellish minions. They are demonic in their actions and thoughts. He truly is a type of anti-Christ. ~:)

  5. ***Opps*** "just actions" should be "judge actions". Arthritis is painful today. Silly fat fingers. ~:)

  6. Hi Lulu! I think it's wonderful that you can talk to your daughter about these issues. I feel guided by my faith and it's leaders who tell me that this law is about government. It is not about faith. They are two different things. I find my comfort in that.

I have read many, many bloggers who are writing posts on this issue. All I can say is that I am one person who loves the Lord, and I believe what He says in His holy Word. May God keep me faithful to that, while I strive not to judge, and to love. It's a hard road to walk, but it can be done.
    Blessings,
    Ceil

  7. Thank you for weighing in Ceil. One thing I am certain of we should not become divided over this issue as Believers!
    Blessings Friend!

Your comments keep my writing and often cause me to think. A written form of a hug or a pat on the back and an occasional slap into reality---I treasure them all!
