DOES LOVE TRIUMPH ?

There are those among us who love a good love story (pun intended).  They have an insatiable appetite for chic flicks, all things Hallmark, romance novels, and anything which ends in "Happily Ever After".   There is never a surprise ending, but instead boy always gets girl.  The surprise is only in the twists and turns leading to the never changing end of the story.  These are literally swept off their feet by the notion of love.

There are many forms of love--not just the love between a man and woman.  There are four types of love mentioned in the Bible.  Unfortunately, because of the limitations of our English language, much is lost in the translation and the nuances of the word are sometimes misunderstood.

There is

Eros which is sensual or romantic love (Refer to the first paragraph)

Storge which is family love -such as love between a brother and sister (Though Cain and Able proved to be the first in a long line of exceptions)

Philia which is the love between Christians (We could speak volumes on this-but let's just list all the denominations to understand how we can bend this to suit ourselves.)

Agape which is God's immeasurable, incomparable love for humankind

While the first three are sometimes flawed due to the fallen world we live in, the fourth never fails.  God's love is eternal, without flaw, perfect and we are the recipient of this perfect love.  Love does indeed triumph when God is doing the dispensing.  We humans are the ones who manage to mess it up!

16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
I John 4:16

  1. The thing is ... what does man/woman really mean when they say, "I love you"?

    God bless.

  2. I would imagine at different times it could be any of the first three, Victor. What are your thoughts?

Your comments keep my writing and often cause me to think. A written form of a hug or a pat on the back and an occasional slap into reality---I treasure them all!
