RELYING ON LUCK

We all have wished someone or some group

Let me assure you, I am as guilty as they come.  There are all kinds of saying dealing with luck~

  • Good luck!
  • Break a leg!
  • Knock 'em dead!
  • Blow them away!
  • Best of luck!
  • You'll do great!
  • Fingers crossed!

This is a short list from the over 100 ways I found to wish GOOD LUCK while skipping through the WWW.

WELL if we are wishing someone LUCK.  I need to know exactly WHAT luck is.

success or failure apparently brought by chance
rather than through one's own actions

chance considered as a force that causes good or bad things to happen.

something regarded as bringing about or portending good or bad things.

I would never claim to have all the answers to the great philosophical questions of the universe, but I do NOT believe in luck.  If outcomes are totally dependent upon luck, why would any of us EVER prepare?  Luck discounts the need for planning and preparation.  I will wish you well, but quickly deny luck being a component in outcomes.  What has luck got to do with anything?

I thought of this oft repeated proverb

Based upon Irish history, I am not certain you are wishing anyone good fortune with this saying.  Personally I prefer to not experience famine, struggle, disease, war, and being ruled by another nation.

Wishing someone good luck will not cause me to jump down your throat in disagreement.  This act relays good feelings and intentions.  It does not rock my world that you might believe in luck.

It would seem if we believe in luck and chance, it calls into question a Sovereign God.  What does luck say about God having a plan for each of us?  Are we stating God's plan can be over-ridden by good luck?  Just a little food for thought today.  Good luck mulling this one over.

"In him we have obtained an inheritance,
having been predestined according to the purpose of him
who works all things according to the counsel of his will"
Ephesians 1:11

  1. Not a believer in luck, either, Lulu. But we certainly are all guilty of wishing it for someone, aren't we? I'm reminded of that funny song they used to sing on Hee Haw ages ago; one of the lines stated, "If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all." LOL!
    Blessings!

  2. Is winning the lottery by allowing a computer to randomly select a set of numbers a stroke of good luck? I suspect many would say absolutely. I fear that society has embedded the concept rather deep in the minds of we humans. You remind us that blind luck is contrary to the sovereignty of the one true maker of the universe and the world we live in.

Your comments keep my writing and often cause me to think. A written form of a hug or a pat on the back and an occasional slap into reality---I treasure them all!
