CHRISTMAS MAGIC

I have spent most of my life looking for the magic of Christmas.  As a child, my thoughts of magic all surrounded Santa Claus and what would be under the tree.  My expectations and reality had a gap the size of Palo Duro Canyon.

This piece of Christmas magic came to a screeching halt when I discovered Santa's toys in the back of Daddy's station wagon one warm Christmas Eve when outside playing after dark.  I am certain he never knew my discovery, for I was wise enough to know if I squealed--Santa would stop coming.

As an adult--I worked feverishly trying to create the magic for my children.  The quest soon resembled a free-fall flight into the abyss of Never Enough.  The tree had to be perfect, all the wishes had to be fulfilled, the gifts had to wrapped with co-ordinating bow and paper, the meals had to be memorable, the decorations grew with each successive year, and every party and family event had to be attended--wearing stylish and unique Christmas attire and oh yes--every church service, candlelight and carols, Christmas program, family night supper, cantata, and hanging of the greens was a must---after all it was about Jesus!  It soon became it's own greatest show on earth--closely resembling a Christmas Circus.  This was not magic--it was a fruitless endeavor to achieve non-existent perfection.

Alas--the children are grown and I am alone--and it should follow suit that the magic has been lost.  OH NO--now what do I do--have Hallmark Christmas movie marathons and read novels filled with imaginary people living imaginary perfect lives in the midst of a White Christmas and love all around.  Having given up on having Christmas magic in my own life---I live vicariously through the lives of fictional characters dreamed up by some writer- like me- with an over active imagination.

As with many things in life, I have been looking in all the wrong places. For after all, what is Christmas---the celebration of the birth of The King.  WHY would I have a need to look beyond the magic of the very first Christmas?  God sends His Son---part of the Holy Trinity---to be born to a virgin --to live among men--for the purpose of becoming the sacrifice for OUR sins.  HOW MUCH MORE MAGICAL COULD YOU GET?

 Mystical---Magical---Magnificent---Miraculous---

BIRTH OF THE KING!

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid.  I bring you good new os great joy that will be for all the people.  Today int he town of David a Savior has been born to you, he is Christ the Lord."
Luke 2:9-11

Your comments keep my writing and often cause me to think. A written form of a hug or a pat on the back and an occasional slap into reality---I treasure them all!
