THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST

I have quite the collection of Christmas tree ornaments amassed over the life of our family.  I put those ornaments away five Christmases ago and didn't know if I could ever face pulling them out again.  I decorated my tree with all new---super glitzy and fancy ornaments for the past four years.  It was a decorator's delight--totally devoid of any memories.

We all have different taste--and mine lends to those things which are filled with memories, not the "Southern Living" style.

I pulled out those old ornaments this year and spent an evening decorating the tree.  I smiled, laughed, and got a little teary as I pulled each and every memory filled ornament out of the box.  Even decorating alone---it was a delightful evening filled with good thoughts of Christmases over many decades.

No matter what life looks like today--one thing cannot be stripped from us--the memories of the past.  And the majority of those memories of raising children, the miracle of grands, and living life---they are all good memories.  While the future may look different--you cannot take the history of yesterday away.

So--yes--for many this is a difficult time of the year--but instead of dwelling on thoughts of today---I am focusing on all the wonderful years of the past--and thanking God for the blessing of good memories.

And looking forward to adding to the collection--as I continue to make memories in the future--

The visit by the Ghost of Christmas Past was a wonderful walk down Memory Lane,

which left me with excited anticipation of all God has planned for the future.

But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
II Peter 3:13

  1. I think Christmas Tree decorations should be edible. Can you imagine a tree covered with chocolates, sweets, biscuits, pieces of pizza, burgers and cans of beer? How delightful that would be? In every sense of the word.

Unfortunately my family are old fashioned and traditional and they go for the old decorations used year after year and, as you so rightly say, full of memories of years gone by. But you can't eat memories can you? No matter how sweet the memory, you can't remember a pizza you had years ago and enjoy it again.

Seriously Lulu; life is full of memories. Some sweet, some not so much so. We should spend our lives making happy memories so they can sustain us when times are hard and difficult.

God bless you and may your memories be nice ones. (Put the others aside).

    1. Victor, I laughed out loud over your edible ornaments. Here in the South--that is asking for a house full of pests---of the insect variety! I am working on leaving all the bad ones in the past and cherishing the good ones, Victor~
      Blessings, Friend!

  2. Nothing shakes those memories up than peeking into an old box filled with very personalized ornaments. Some years we're up to that trip down memory lane, and other years we simply close the box up and move on to the next thing. I'm so glad that decorating this year has given you joy and smiles, Lulu. May your weekend be filled to overflowing with even more comfort and joy!

  3. So happy you were able to open that "box" and enjoy those memories of yesteryear. As Victor said "life is full of memories"., some sweet and some painful but memories none the less. They have helped mold us into the person we are and you, sweet friend, are a trustworthy and caring person whose love of God, family and friends is shown each day. Time to make new happy memories. love you

Your comments keep my writing and often cause me to think. A written form of a hug or a pat on the back and an occasional slap into reality---I treasure them all!
