WHERE THE HECK IS THE FUNNY FARM?

ALL of my life, I have heard I belong on the "Funny Farm".  Here I was thinking everyone thought I was really funny---turns out they really think I am slightly crazy.  GUILTY!

During many of my conversations while here in Ruston, there has been a common thread---Life Is NOT Easy!  If you think you have a corner on the market of hard and pain---you don't come close. It is a level playing field loaded with players.   All of us have our struggles,  problems, and kick you in the gut life occurrences.  There are many in the same boat--in fact--I don't know how the boat stays afloat!  I have never seen anyone who does not have some sort of struggle in life.  Not struggling today---wait until tomorrow---it will come.

One other thing I have noticed---in the midst of the most serious conversation--one filled with anguish, disappointment, or grief---somehow we always managed to laugh.  And in the midst of tears---we found a thread of hope with our laughter.  We always remembered the sweet times--times filled with joy and laughter and the dark somehow lightened with our chuckles.

When I found this lyric, I thought it summed up precisely what I am trying to say.  God has given us this marvelous gift of laughter to remind us of the joy of life.  What better balm for pain, anger, and dismay than remembering the good, the silly, and the ridiculous.  As long as I am able to laugh, I know there is a promise for a brighter day.

I may belong on the funny farm--but there are worse things!  I am thankful for God's  marvelous gift of laughter and pray I am abundantly blessed with it all the days of my life.

“Then our mouth was filled with laughter,

and our tongue with shouts of joy;

then they said among the nations,

“The Lord has done great things for the.”

Psalms 126:2

  1. I really don't understand people with a sense of humour. Laughing and joking about everything. I have always been serious and taken things with the sadness and desolate state that the world is in.

For example, the other day a friend of mine was very depressed. Suicidal even. He wanted to go to the library and I drove him there. He asked the librarian for a book on "How to commit suicide". The librarian refused him, because he would not return the book. Isn't this sad?

A guy sits at a bar in a skyscraper restaurant high above the city. He slams a shot of tequila, goes over to the window and jumps out.

The guy sitting next to him can’t believe what he just saw. He’s more surprised when, 10 minutes later, the same guy walks back into the bar and sits down next to him.

The astonished onlooker asks, “How did you do that? I just saw you jump out the window, and we’re hundreds of feet above the ground!”

The jumper responds by slurring, “Well, I don’t get it either. I slam a shot of tequila, and when I jump out the window, the tequila makes me slow down right before I hit the ground. Watch.” He takes a shot, goes to the window and jumps out.

The other guy runs to the window and watches as the guy falls to just above the sidewalk, slows down and lands softly on his feet. A few minutes later, the jumper walks back into the bar.

The other guy has to try it, too, so he orders a shot of tequila. He slams it and jumps out the window. As he reaches the bottom, he doesn’t slow down at all. SPLAT!

The first guy orders another shot of tequila. The bartender shakes his head. “You’re really aquite the joker when you’re drunk, Superman.” Sad, isn't it?

I think I was born sad. No sooner did I join this world that the nurse slapped me on the backside. And I hadn't done anything wrong yet. She then saw my face and slapped my dad!!!

I had a very sad childhood. Nothing to joke and laugh at. I was a disappointment to my parents, as I could not do anything well. I was bad at sports and could not swim. We lived by the sea and my dad used to take me out on a boat, lower me gently in the water, and teach me to swim to shore. Somehow, I always got to the shore before the sharks.

I used to play with my parents and siblings hide-and-seek. I used to lean against a tree and count to 100 whilst they hid. I then turned round and searched for them all over Europe.

Often, when I returned home from school I found that my parents had moved house.

In reality, Lulu, life is very sad and there's so little to laugh about. I remember once, on a crowded elevator, someone broke wind. That is so wrong on many levels.

    God bless.
