  1. Here too, Lulu, the weather is getting cooler and the roses are dying out. Leaves are falling one by one. We've had frost on the car already once or twice needing to clean the windscreen.

In the garden we've had problems with Speedy Gonzales, our tortoise. Ever since we got him we have worried in case he drowns when it rains a lot and the water gets higher and above his head and his shell. Or indeed if he were to float away in the torrent of rain, go down the river, then the sea and get eaten by a whale thinking he is a crusty pie.

So I have taught him to swim. To no avail. He is useless. Cannot do the breast stroke, or even the backstroke. Swimming on his back makes him sink to the bottom of the bath like a stone. So he is useless on his back in water as well as on dry land. I tried to teach him to roll over from being on his back. I placed him on a table and rocked him gently from side to side. When he stopped rolling he told me the ceiling needed painting!

So to save him from drowning in the rain I taught Speedy to climb trees. It took time, but he managed it. He grips the trunk tightly with his little legs and sharp nails and climbs slowly up the tree to safety. The problem is that the idiot cannot get down again. He holds tight to a branch many feet up and will not come down. He has confused all the birds who now want to nest on the ground instead. I have to climb up the tree with a ladder and bring Speedy down every time he climbs up there. When I get down, the dog gets so excited he bites my leg.

Life is not so good right now in our hood.

    God bless.

Your comments keep my writing and often cause me to think. A written form of a hug or a pat on the back and an occasional slap into reality---I treasure them all!
