COMPARATIVELY UNIQUE

One of the stack of books I am currently reading  is

My interest was piqued when I read a review of this number one best seller.  I must admit, I began the book with a cynical attitude.  I apologize to all my young friends, BUT I finally understand how my mother must have felt when I disdained her wisdom and experience.  I have a jaded opinion of the millenniums and their seeming answers to all that ails us.  When a thirty year old begins giving me advice from their vast store house of experience, I tend to turn a deaf ear.  Rolling around in my head is "Give you another 20-30 years of living life and THEN I will value your advice.  That is categorically wrong on my part, because I have heard some true wisdom come from young women.  I should at least give them a listen before shooting down their advice.

Well after finishing chapter one of this book and I will say, I am going to read the rest of what this Power Blogger has to say.  Rachel has gotten my attention.  NOW in fairness, I probably would not read her blog for she gives advice in all facets of life, cooking, family, fashion and all around life coach.  Life coaches tend to turn me off from the get go since they come a little too close to being cheer leaders.  WHO can stand all that happy all of the time??  So I was pleasantly surprised to read a honest admission of "Far From Perfect" in the very first chapter.  There you go--my kind of girl!  Someone like me who spends a lot of time cleaning up the latest mess they have made.

NOW I have spent a GREAT deal of time leading up to today's topic, comparison.  In the very first chapter Rachel advises the readers to

comparing yourself to others!  GUILTY!  As I thought this over, I remembered God created us all uniquely.  The beauty of living in this world--no two of us are alike.  Now there are certainly glimpses of similarities, but no one is your clone.  SO, if we are not alike, WHY do we spend one moment of time comparing ourselves to others??   I am not as strong, not as smart, not as well read, not as pretty--on and on--there is ALWAYS someone out there who is more.  BUT we forget there are others out there looking at us and thinking they are not as----as we are.  HOW ABOUT THEM APPLES!  So why would we spend time trying to grade ourselves in each and every thing?

THE WORLD (we ALL know who is running loose in it) has convinced us we are not worthy because we are not as good in  --fill in the blank or don't have what someone else does.  Rather than looking at ourselves and thanking God for our uniqueness and appreciating the gifts He has lavished upon us, we are looking at our sisters and comparing ourselves.  GUARANTEED to breed dissatisfaction-depression-dismay because we are always comparing ourselves to those who seem to have more.  It is NOT going to be easy to break this habit--BUT JUST DO IT!  "Comparison is the death of joy, and the only person you need to be better than is the one you were yesterday."  AMEN, SISTER, AMEN!

1For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
Psalm 139:13-14

  2. Yes, Lulu, playing the comparison game is always dangerous and detrimental to our mental and emotional health. Do I fall into that trap from time to time? Unfortunately, yes. But right away I'll start thinking about and thanking God of all the blessings I have in little ol' me. Works every time!
    Blessings!

Your comments keep my writing and often cause me to think. A written form of a hug or a pat on the back and an occasional slap into reality---I treasure them all!
