SUMMER SESSION #23-BELLS ARE RINGING

 Today is the day--all our local (Lincoln Parish) students return to the hallowed halls of academia.  Do you know---I am SO old---I remember the old large bronze bell in front of the school which was rung by hand to call in the students from the play ground.  Talking about OLD!  By the time I was in junior high, our school had electronic bells to announce the beginning of the day, class changes, and the close of the day.  It was NOT the same!

Some things do remain the same as I learned while volunteering in the schools.  They still have announcements over the PA first thing in the morning, they still stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance and in Texas they repeat the Texas Pledge (it is a country unto itself).  Sadly no one is praying---at least not out loud.  No law will ever keep the prayers from being lifted, especially around test time.  The elementary students still have recess, though not as long and children still run and squeal when on the playground.

I found this photo of my alma mater in the archives.

A distinct memory pre-air conditioning was HOW HOT it was in those rooms!  Of course many did not have air conditioning at home, so we were conditioned to the heat.  We also did not begin school until after Labor Day as I recall.  I can remember sitting on those wooden desks with sweat rolling down my back.  The distinct feel of a river of sweat slowly rolling down by back has not been forgotten.  Then there was the problem of sticking to the desk because your legs had sweated and formed a glue like grip to the wood.  It was the best of times and it also could be the hardest of times.  My memory, though, holds it all as dear.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A FEW DECADES HAVE MADE!  The loss of Mayberry innocence saddens me for our children.  They know FAR too much about the world at FAR too early an age.  There was never even a thought of someone walking in and shooting innocent children in those days.  What have we allowed to happen as we slowly have become more and more tolerant?   We choose to not think about it, and accept it.  Does that make it right?

PRAY FOR OUR SCHOOLS & HAPPY SCHOOL YEAR TO ALL!

"I solemnly exhort you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,

who is to judge the living and the dead,

and by His appearing and His kingdom:

preach the word;

be ready in season and out of season;

correct, rebuke, and exhort,

with great patience and instruction."

2 Timothy 4: 1-2

  1. I, too, have those sweaty memories of starting school with no air-conditioning; then again, we didn't have it at home, either, so I guess we simply went from one sweltering place to another, Lulu. Sadly, our society has progressed downhill ever since prayer and God got removed from our schools. We need a revival!!!
    Blessings!
